The Home Repair Assistance Program offered by Métis Capital Housing Corporation provides financial support to eligible Métis homeowners for crucial home repairs. This program ensures safe, healthy, and comfortable living conditions by assisting with essential repairs such as plumbing, electrical work, roofing, and more. With a focus on affordability and accessibility, the Home Repair Assistance Program helps Métis families maintain their homes and improve their quality of life. Read below to see if you are eligible and to learn how to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Your application must be approved before renovations can begin.
  • The primary applicant must be an Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen (formerly known as the Métis Nation of Alberta).
  • The total annual household income must not exceed $150,000.
  • The home must be the applicant’s primary residence.
  • Proof that the mortgage is in good standing, if applicable.
  • The applicant must not own any other property, including land or a home.

Required Documents

  • Completed and signed application.
  • Two Pieces of identification:
    • Applicant: One government-issued photo ID and your Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen Card (formerly Métis Nation of Alberta Citizenship Card).
    • Co-applicant (if applicable): Either two pieces of government-issued photo ID, your Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen Card and one government-issued photo ID.
  • Copy of current Land Title Certificate.
  • Notice of Tax Assessment for all household residents over 18.
  • Proof of home insurance.
    • If you cannot obtain home insurance due to circumstances beyond your control, please get in touch with our team to discuss your eligibility.
  • Proof that existing mortgage and property tax is current.
  • Contractor quotes: One quote is needed for rural residents, and three for urban.

Contractor Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of two million dollars of Liability Insurance.
  • Must have current Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) coverage in Alberta.
  • The homeowner is responsible for the deposit if required by the contractor.
  • We do not pay or reimburse deposits.

Financial Assistance Available

A maximum amount of $20,000 per application.

Eligible Repairs

The Home Repairs Assistance Program will assist you with essential non-cosmetic repairs such as:

  • Windows and doors
  • Plumbing and Electrical
  • Roofing and siding
  • Fireplace, air conditioner, furnace, and hot water tank
  • Appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, washers, and dryers
  • Painting, countertops, and cabinets
  • Essential landscaping like fencing, grading, and sod
  • Insulation, drywall repair
  • Mold Remediation
  • Water and sewer systems
  • Driveways and sidewalks
  • Mobility-accessible adaptations, such as widened doorways, washroom modifications, and raised garden beds, will also be considered.
  • Other repairs that affect the health and safety of the residents.

Application Process

  1. Download and complete the application form below or pick it up from a Métis Capital Housing Office.
  2. Gather all required documents.
  3. Apply via:
    • Email: homerepair@metishousing.ca
    • Mail: Métis Capital Housing Corporation, 11923 121A Street, Edmonton, AB T5L 0A2
    • In-person: Drop off at the above address

Approved Applicant Conditions

  • Sign Agreement: The applicant must sign a funding agreement with Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC), which allows MCHC to place a caveat on the property.
  • Provide Insurance: Provide proof of insurance on the property.
  • Consent and Release Form: Sign a consent form permitting MCHC to contact relevant third parties.
  • Start Repairs: Begin repairs within six months of the application date.
  • Work Completion Confirmation: MCHC will confirm that the work is complete and that you are satisfied before paying the contractor.
  • Direct Payment: MCHC will pay the approved funding directly to the contractor(s) upon completion of the job(s) or to the store(s) where you purchase the materials.
  • Excess Costs: You must directly pay the contractor any costs that exceed the approved funding.
  • Forgiven Funding: After five years, the funding will be forgiven, and the caveat will be removed.
  • Repayment Conditions: If you sell the property or move out within five years, you must repay a prorated portion of the funding. Other circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Important Information:

  • Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to applicants who submit complete applications and valid documents.
  • If you submitted an unsuccessful application in the past, please be advised that you must reapply using the updated application form when the program reopens. Previous applications will not be considered.
