The Student Rental Supplement Program by Métis Capital Housing Corporation is designed to support Métis students pursuing education. This program provides monthly rental assistance, ensuring that students can focus on their studies without the burden of high housing costs. The Student Rental Supplement Program helps Métis students achieve their educational goals by providing stable and affordable housing. Read below to see if you are eligible and to learn how to apply.
NEW — Student Supplement funding cycle runs from September to August annually. Renewal applications are required for the next school year and are due by August 1 each year.
Eligibility Criteria
- The primary applicant must be an Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen (formerly known as the Métis Nation of Alberta).
- Must be enrolled as a student.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- The total annual household income must not surpass the current Income Thresholds set by the Alberta Government.
- The home rented must be the applicant’s primary residence while attending school.
- The applicant must not own any other property, including land or a home.
- You must declare all household income on your application, whether married or cohabitating.
- Renting from immediate family members is not permitted.
Required Documents to Apply
- Completed and signed application.
- Two pieces of identification:
- Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizenship Card (Previously known as a Métis Nation of Alberta Citizenship card).
- Driver’s license, passport, or any other government-issued ID.
- Confirmation of enrollment.
- Copy of current rental agreement (lease).
- Notice of Tax Assessment for the applicant and spouse, if applicable.
- Latest pay stubs from all working members of the household.
- Training sponsorship documents.
Financial Assistance Available
- Receive up to $2,400 rental supplement annually and a maximum security deposit of $850 per application.
- Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) will directly pay the landlord $200 per month.
- Applicants can receive rent supplement assistance for a maximum of 48 months throughout their lifetime.

Approved Applicants Conditions
- Sign Agreement: The applicant must sign a Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) funding agreement.
- Annual and Periodic Updates: Submit updated household and income information yearly, potentially up to three times a year, to continue receiving the rent supplement.
- Occupancy Condition: Only individuals listed on the original application can reside in the rental property; otherwise, the agreement will be void.
- Direct Payment: MCHC will pay the approved funding directly to the landlord.
Important Information:
- Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to applicants who submit complete applications and valid documents.
- If you submitted an unsuccessful application in the past, please be advised that you must reapply using the updated application form when the program reopens. Previous applications will not be considered.
